Welcome to ISUF 2026

Established in 1994 by 20 architects, geographers, planners and historians, ISUF has about 600 individual and institutional members from 50 countries worldwide.

The International Seminar on Urban Form (ISUF) is a leading academic organisation that has united scholars and research groups focused on the form of the city for over 30 years.

ISUF connects researchers and practitioners across disciplines, including geography, urban planning, architecture, history, anthropology, and urban design. This global network fosters projects that explore urban form theory and specific studies on various settlement types, from neighbourhoods to regions, and from historic villages to 21st-century megacities.

Each year, ISUF promotes an international conference. The last twelve editions took place in Porto, Rome, Nanjing, Valencia, Krasnoyarsk, Nicosia, Salt Lake City, Glasgow, Lodz/Krakow, Belgrade, São Paulo and Torino, contributing significantly to the development of Urban Morphology as a discipline. Thus, for the second time in over a decade, the event will be held in Latin America, with Santiago de Chile as the host city for 2026.

Santiago, Chile's capital and largest city, boasts today a population of approximately 8 million.

The Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urban Studies (FADEU) at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile is in Santiago, a city founded in 1541 by the Spanish conqueror Pedro de Valdivia, in a valley that was once part of the Inca empire.

The city's downtown core displays splendid 19th-century neoclassical architecture, with notable landmarks like La Moneda Palace, originally a colonial coin factory, now serving as the Presidential Palace, surrounded by the Civic Centre meticulously planned by Karl H. Brunner in 1932.

A rich blend of modern and historic architecture characterises the urban landscape. The city centre features a wealth of modernist office and apartment buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, alongside mid-20th-century housing complexes. Architectural marvels such as the Benedictine Monastery Chapel, the United Nations (ECLAC) building, and the Technical State University contribute to the city's diverse architectural tapestry.

Despite its modernization, Santiago still preserves colonial remnants interspersed throughout its metropolitan fabric. The cityscape is punctuated by standalone hills and the swift-flowing Mapocho River, bordered by green spaces like the Parque Forestal. Additionally, the majestic Andes Mountain range provides a stunning backdrop visible from various vantage points across the city.  Santiago's geographical location offers unparalleled access to natural wonders, with vineyards encircling its outskirts and the mountains and Pacific Ocean within an hour's drive, making it a truly captivating destination.
