The International Seminar on Urban Form, titled "Intelligences and Realities," serves as a meeting point highlighting the dynamic interplay between abstract thinking and the tangible reality of urban morphology. Under the banner of "Intelligences," it underscores the importance of transdisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity, integrating both local and global knowledge for a comprehensive understanding. Conversely, "Realities" seeks to showcase the diverse realities of urban contexts, acknowledging the multitude of factors influencing urban form, from social and cultural to economic and political aspects. This conference provides a comprehensive space to explore the complexity of urban morphology from various perspectives, integrating theory and practice to address contemporary challenges collaboratively and reflectively.

Three Perspectives of Santiago´s Urban Center through its Architectural Forms.

 

This conference highlights the spatial transformation of Santiago’s urban center, understood as a part of the city that has played various roles at different stages of its evolution.

I draw on Steven Johnson’s conception, which proposes that the city, like any emergent system, is a pattern over time that retains its form because “certain elements of urban life are passed down from generation to generation because they are associated with a physical structure that has its own durability”. (1)

This allows me to explain the chronological phases of the formation, construction, and transition of the grid, which serves as the foundation underpinning the major transformations observed in the urban center and the city’s overall layout.

I will also outline how different spatialities and episodes of urban form materialize and interrelate in each phase, responding to various institutional rationalities, economic interests, and social actors, among other factors.

With this in mind, I will rely on graphic representation as a research method for urban morphology and architectural typology at highly detailed scales, which will allow me to identify a city made up of parts without losing sight of the big picture.

 However, through this analysis, I would also like to share the excitement of observing how the physical and social reality of the city of Santiago has been shaped through the collaboration of diverse forms of intelligence at different times.

As we shall see, this involves an approach that confirms that, on the site once occupied by the colonial city in the 16th century, a new type of spatial organization emerged in the 19th and 20th century.

Although today’s Santiago metropolis is characterized as a contemporary city marked by its expansion, dispersion, and fragmentation—one that encompasses many cities—we can affirm that the centrality of the historic founding site has been maintained over time as a morphological unit on a territorial scale.

Urbanization in the shatter zone:                                                              theses on cities, fossil energy, and biospheric crisis

 

How should we understand cities—and their shifting spatial configurations—in an era of accelerating climate change and biospheric crisis? This lecture argues that answering this question requires not only new empirical research but a new framework for critical urban theory. Rather than treating the city as a bounded territorial unit, it proposes that urbanization under capitalism be understood through the evolving relations between cities and the wider operational landscapes (of biogeophysical appropriation and waste) that support them.

From the late nineteenth century onward, capitalist urbanization has been organized through a fossil-fuel-based metabolic regime that links urban agglomerations to expanding, carbon-intensive landscapes of extraction, industrial agriculture, energy production, logistics, and waste. These interconnected processes have reshaped urban space while dramatically intensifying the circulation, capitalization, and entropic dissipation of matter and energy across the planet.

A central focus of the lecture is the role of fixed capital within this fossil-based metabolic regime. Long-term investments in buildings, infrastructures, transport systems, agro-industrial zones, and extractive landscapes—within and beyond major metropolitan regions—have not only enabled unprecedented waves of capitalist growth but have also locked societies into increasingly resource-, carbon-, and waste-intensive patterns of production, circulation, and consumption. These fixed capital investments create a “ratchet effect,” embedding successive rounds of geo-metabolic intensification in durable infrastructural landscapes that lock in progressively intensifying metabolic throughput along with escalating streams of biogeophysical appropriation, pollution, and waste.

Within this geohistorical formation, urbanization cannot be understood solely through the spatial organization of cities themselves. It must also be examined with reference to the broader infrastructural matrices, operational landscapes, imperial political ecologies, and geo-metabolic dynamics that animate city/non-city relations under a fossil-based regime of capital. Drawing upon feminist Marxist and eco-Marxist perspectives, the lecture argues that these processes depend upon the continual appropriation of matter, energy, land, and labor from non-city territories, while simultaneously degrading and destabilizing the environments on which urbanization—and social life more generally--depend. Reconceptualizing urban morphology in these terms is essential for any approach to environmental architecture, design, and planning that seeks to contribute to struggles for more just, livable, and non-violent urban futures on a rapidly warming planet.​

Why All Designers Need Urban Morphology - Though They Don't Seem to Know It.

 

This key-note address proposes that recurrent failures in architecture and urban planning trace to a common underlying condition: the absence of an explicit, operational theory of evolutionary change within both disciplines. While urban morphology is epistemologically grounded in the study of incremental, adaptive, and cumulative transformation, architecture and planning have historically developed without a systematic framework for understanding how the built environment changes over time.
This gap is not merely theoretical but has practical consequences across multiple dimensions of design practice. The argument unfolds in three stages, illustrated with reference to the new town of Cumbernauld as a grounding historical example.
First, the built environment evolves continuously and organically, regardless of design intent. Interventions that disregard this dynamic risk misalignment with the systems they aim to transform. Second, well-documented shortcomings—architecture's formalism and contextual detachment, planning's procedural rigidity and implementation deficits—are examined as derivative expressions of this evolutionary blind spot. Though diverse in appearance, these phenomena share a common conceptual root.
Third, the address contends that urban morphology occupies a unique position: it is the only design-oriented field that incorporates evolution as a foundational principle rather than an external consideration. This makes morphology not a peripheral specialism but a necessary complement to architectural and planning education. The argument does not claim that morphology offers ready-made solutions, but rather that it provides the conceptual tools for understanding change—a precondition for effective intervention. Neglecting evolution in urban design is comparable to neglecting biology in medicine: not
a tactical oversight, but a categorical limitation.
The address concludes by advocating for systematic integration of morphological thinking into design curricula—not as a corrective to past failures, but as a means of equipping practitioners with a more adequate understanding of the built environment as an evolving entity.​

Urban Form and Resilience in the Face of Extreme Events

 

The evolution of cities and territories is shaped by situations of extreme uncertainty, such as socio-natural disasters, wars and catastrophes. The destruction caused by such events makes us reflect on the role of urban form and design in the face of increasing uncertainty stem from climate change, rapid urbanization, and geopolitical crises, among other factors, and consider how these events might lead to the creation of more resilient territories, compeling us to design how we inhabit and coexist with risk. This approach raises questions about how urban design and planning can anticipate risks, and enable the formulation of specific principles to reduce territorial vulnerabilities. Also, about how cities should be designed in post-catastrophic recovery and the role of urban form during the event itself. Reconstruction efforts often increase both exposure and vulnerability to past and new hazards. Therefore, incorporating information about the interaction between risk and form into the evolution of our territories can help us build a more complex and vibrant future.

Using morphotopological models and critical cartographies that allow us to measure and understand the spatial and structural transformations of cities, we will provide a counterpoint between cities affected by contemporary wars and armed conflicts in Eastern Europe and Asia, and coastal cities in Chile, one of the world’s most exposed countries to socio-natural hazards. In the first case, through a critical depiction of the situation before and after the destruction, we will propose an alternative approach to reconstruction—one that differs from the traditional model—based on the preservation of urban complexity, the distinction between structure and system, and the evolution of space over time. In the second one, we will reflect on how urban form can shape (amplify or reduce) exposure, susceptibility, and response capacity ​to hazards such as tsunamis and wild-urban interface fires, enabling the formulation of specific principles to reduce territorial vulnerabilities​.

Ultimately, the conference reflects on disasters not only as moments of rupture, but also as episodes that reveal the underlying fragilities and latent capacities of the urban form. It argues that urban form should not be understood merely as the physical setting where disasters and conflicts unfold, but as an active condition that can intensify or reduce risk, sustain memory, and enable recovery. In this sense, the dialogue between war-torn cities and Chilean territories exposed to socio-natural hazards opens a broader question, how can design and planning transform destruction into knowledge for more adaptive, complex, and resilient urban futures?
